The Pareto Principle

In the late 1800s, economist Vilfredo Pareto established that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. The Pareto Principle has proven its validity in a number of other areas. In the business world, for example, it has been found that:

  • 80% of the sales/profit come from 20% of the clients or products
  • 80% of the product costs come from 20% of the products
  • 80% of inventory value comes from 20% of the stock
  • 80% of decisions come from 20% of meeting time
  • 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts

Because they are high-impact, the activities on your Current Goals & Projects list represent 80% of your overall results. Achieving these results will consume approximately 20% of your efforts. Simply stated, if, for every 10 individual actions you take in a given day, two (20%) contribute to the successful completion of your goals and projects, you will realize 80% of your results.
